Chris,
You don’t say how old you are but I am assuming you are young.
Also, please define “travel”. Will you be walking, riding a bike, driving a pickup, riding a horse, train, bus, etc., or flying?
Also, I, as well as many others, I’ll bet, have no idea what a Mossberg Maverick 88 is. Is it a pistol, rifle, shotgun, assault rifle, machine gun, what? Also, what caliber, or gauge is it, not that it makes any difference as to the legality.
Now, with all that in mind, what you are going to get on here (the internet) as far as whether anything is legal or not, is a bunch of opinions. Opinions are like noses, everyone has one.
What you should do, if you really want to know if something is legal or not, is to either call, or go in person to, your local District Attorney’s office and ask the D.A. in your jurisdiction, personally, any questions you may have. Do NOT rely on answers from police officers because they may or may not know the CORRECT legal advice to give you, but they will certainly, and very authoritatively, give you their opinion. Only the D.A. in your jurisdiction can give you the right advice. He will be found in your county courthouse.
I learned early on in my 25 years as a cop, that, no matter what the law books say, or what the other officers’ say, what’s against the law is what the DA says is against the law!!!
One rhetorical question I have: Why do you want to drive around with a gun anyway? If it’s just to look like a big shot, or to look cool, you’re only opening yourself up to a lot of trouble.
But whatever, good luck…..
Well, funny thing. NC law doesnt really specify. Concealed weapons are not permitted, and that extends to firearms concealed within the vehicle. They speak of it being readily accessable by the driver or occupants (cant be unless you have a concealed weapons permit), but dont say how to properly transport. If you have a pickup (you said truck gun, so im guessing here) it seems as though it would depend on your cab configuration. If you have it in a case, unloaded and behind the seat out of your reach, it seems like it’d be OK.
If you leave it out in the open (in plain sight) its legal, since NC is an open carry state. I wouldnt really recommend that, it makes you a target for theives and could get you shot by a jumpy cop if you get pulled over for speeding….
If you get a regular stock and put it in a rack, seems like it’d be legal too. Of course, your location really determines if this is socially acceptable.
tahoe guy has it right no matter where you are in the states as long as you meet the age to own and the qualifications [so if you legally bought it] then you can keep it in your truck unloaded and out of reach for as long as you want.
its just a part,so you should be fine, make sure you don’t carry ammo/magazines
